The Marennes-Oleron Bay is subject to chronic pollution by cadmium (Cd) from the Gironde watershed. An ecosystem approach was used to study the fate of cadmium in the different biological compartments. The median Cd concentration was 0.4 mu g g(-1) dry weight for the 63 benthic species measured. When combined with the respective biomasses for the different species studied, we estimated that 7 kg of Cd is partitioned into the soft tissues of the benthic species in the bay. The majority of this cadmium was distributed between primary producers, mainly microphytobenthos (40 %), and suspension-feeders, mainly oysters (40 %). All other benthic species measured were associated with negligible masses of Cd. Two trophic levels contained 98 % of the Cd: 3 kg was... |

The catalogue of soft-bottom macrofauna in the Marennes-Oleron Bay (French Atlantic coast) has been updated from a benthic survey conducted in April-May 1995. 262 stations were selected using a stratified random strategy based on sediment types and bathymetric levels. 231 soft-bottom macrofauna species were identified. A synopsis of all available literature since the first local marine study published in 1710 by Antoine Ferchauld de Reaumur indicated that 60 benthic species were reported in the Marennes-Oleron Bay for the first time. The sampling effort, i.e. more than 1 station per km(2) and size of the sieving square mesh (1 mm), can partially explain these results. Most of the new recorded species were crustaceans (28 species) and polychaete annelids... |

Diverse species assemblages are often associated with a diversity of habitat structures. Sedimentary systems seem to be no exception, as within sedimentary systems benthic species diversity within a sample point appears to correlate with sediment grain size complexity. However, it remains to be shown whether total benthic species diversity relates to a system's sediment heterogeneity across multiple systems. In the present paper we examined whether bivalve diversity is associated with: (1) sediment heterogeneity across systems and (2) sediment grain size complexity within systems, at 9 temperate and tropical tidal flat systems. Although bivalve life-history strategies, like post-settlement habitat selection, might suggest that sediment heterogeneity should... |

The residence time of the water in different parts of the Marennes-Oléron Bay is one important characteristic of the biological system (Raillard, 1990). For instance, the primary production potentiality of a given area depends on the local turbidity and the residence time of the waters in that area. Further, global assessments of the nitrogen flow between the biological compartments and inflows from the ocean or the Charente river derived from the ecosystem model by Raillard (1990), showed the predominance of the latter term onto the former. A new hydrological model of the Marennes-Oléron Bay yielded two dimensional velocity fields for sorne standard tidallevels: neap-tide, spring-tide, mean tide (Lazur, unpub.). These computations were the basis for the... |

An hydrobiological monitoring survey has been carried out in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron since 1977. Five stations, distributed over the Bay, were sam pied twice a month. Spatial and temporal trends of the physical characteristics (i.e., seawater, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and suspended matter), nutrients (azote, nitrite, nitrate, silicate) and organic variables (chlorophyll a and pheopigments) were assessed by using a statistical time-series analysis mode\. It was used to distinguish seasonal variability from long term trends. Pluviometric data as weil as the Charente River fluxes were similary analyzed by the model. The seasonal variability showed an homogeneous pattern over the five stations for all parameters, but the site-dependent... |

Oyster farming in France is a traditional activity. Each year, 60,000 tons of C. gigas are fattened before being sold. Present-day fattening techniques for improving oyster taste and colour and increasing the meat weight are not particularly reliable. To optimize the fattening process, large phytoplanktonic blooms were induced in ponds, then distributed in oyster ponds. Despite the variability of the autumn weather conditions, diatoms (Skeletonema costatum) have been successfully cultured in outdoor ponds. During neap tides (when no seawater replenishes the water in the oyster beds), between mid-October and mid-December 1996, the fattening index (the weight of the meat) was constant or increased by 10-15% when a supplement of algae of 380.000... |

Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,... |

The purpose of this study is to investigate summer mortality of the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in relation to culture practices in the traditional oyster production region of Marennes-Oleron (France). Four oyster rearing conditions, varying culture location ("on-" or "off-bottom"), and site depth (65% to 80% daily immersion termed "deep" or 45% to 65%, termed "shallow") were studied to compare biologic performance and maturation status of oysters, in relation to sediment and water column parameters. The most severe mortality occurred in June to July in "on-bottom" reared oysters (25%), as compared with 10% mortality in "off-bottom" cultured oysters. Oysters (shell and meat) grew significantly better when reared "off-bottom" than "on-bottom."... |

A model of the growth of cultivated oyster in the Marennes-Oléron bay was developped to assess the influence of the nutrients input and of the amount of oysters on the growth performance (Railiard. 1991). The ecosystem main characteristics are: - short residence time of the water. - high turbidity level, depending on the season, tidal level, bathymetry, currents and wind. The turbidity acts on the primary production through light limitation and on oyster production as a food dilution factor. - presence of high density cultivated areas on mid-tidal flats. The amount of oysters is ranging between 80 000 and 110 000 tons according to the year. - spatial variability of the biological and physical features. - coupling effects of the physic process (transport,... |
